Inside PEZ Art: Pop Culture, Tokyo Drift, and Vintage Absurdity
Welcome to my world. Under the moniker PEZ, I build high-contrast visual narratives that mash together the hyper-saturated energy of modern urban pop culture with the beautifully unhinged world of vintage mid-century consumerism. Working predominantly on large-scale canvases and mixed-media panels, my practice strips away the noise of modern life to reveal the absolute absurdity and dark humor built into the things we consume, worship, and buy into.
My creative signature relies on sharp, calculated line work and razor-focused graphic composition. I take the chaos of street art, fifties advertising, and modern consumer anxiety, and lock it down into tight, meticulously structured frames.
The Tokyo Impact: Visual Overload & Subculture
The defining turning point for my current artistic trajectory comes through travelling every year to Tokyo with my wife, Cheryl Harrison, who is also a highly successful fine artist. Immersing ourselves annually in Japan’s visual velocity, wandering through the neon-drenched alleys of Tokyo, and observing how Japanese subcultures compress intense high-artistry with toy culture and consumerism fundamentally cracked open my perspective.
In Tokyo, I became an obsessive observer of urban space. Japan’s unique cultural landscape—where the elegance of modern architecture sits directly against vending machine rows and chaotic street graphics—inspired me to capture a frantic metropolitan energy using clean, graphic lines and negative space. Much of my work channels that specific feeling of sensory overload, subverting it with western pop tropes.
1950s Marketing & The Art of the Absurd
My deep, enduring fascination with the aesthetics of 1950s marketing illustration is directly anchored in my design background. Having spent years mastering layout rules, commercial typography systems, and persuasive vector design, I view post-war advertising through a technical and analytical lens. There is a delicious, profound absurdity in mid-century advertising—the unnervingly pristine housewives, the over-enthusiastic cartoon mascots, and the shiny corporate promises that plastered the post-war world. It was a time when consumerism tried to disguise itself as utopia.
My paintings leverage that nostalgic graphic style to deliver a punch of modern irony. By applying my design background to look critically at these vintage layouts, I can manipulate traditional mid-century ad structures and inject them with dark… and light humour and urban street elements. I suppose this juxtaposition highlights the ongoing ridiculousness of our modern digital existence. If a painting doesn’t have a layer of wit or cultural commentary beneath, it isn’t a PEZ artwork.
The Shared Studio: A Creative Alliance
Today, I operate from a private studio in the tropics of Port Douglas, Queensland. This isolation allows me to look at metropolitan pop culture from an objective, satirical distance. I share this creative life and studio space with my wife, the highly acclaimed Australian abstract expressionist artist Cheryl Harrison MA. Our studio’s are environments of intense visual contrast: while my hands are stained with the sharp lines, graphic markers, and pop icons of contemporary urban life, her space explores the deep textures, fluid washes, and light-filled realities of abstract expressionism. Whether unpacking our annual visual field notes from Japan or working on standalone collections, sharing this artistic alliance fuels a constant creative dialogue.
